INAE Mentorship Scheme through CSR Funding from Infosys Foundation
Background:
Despite being the fifth-largest economy in the world, India, while aspiring to become a developed nation (Viksit Bharat) by 2047, faces multiple challenges in areas such as energy, environment, habitat, transportation, security, defense, and health. Most of these challenges demand engineering interventions and innovative solutions.
With the world’s largest and youngest population, India must ensure appropriate education and skilling of its youth to harness this demographic dividend for national growth.
Currently, over one million seats are offered annually for engineering degree programs across more than 3,000 institutions approved by AICTE, UGC, and the Ministry of Education. However, there is a wide heterogeneity in the quality of graduates—while a small fraction is highly talented and innovative, a significant majority are inadequately trained and often not industry-ready. Particularly concerning is the suboptimal quality of training and skilling in many institutions, threatening India’s progress in engineering and technology.
A critical starting point is to enhance the competence of engineering educators.
The Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE)—a distinguished peer group of nearly 1,000 Fellows in India and 100 Fellows abroad from academia, industry, and R&D organizations has partnered with Infosys Foundation, an industry leader in Computer Science and Information Technology solutions, to address these challenges.
As a registered non-profit under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) framework, INAE has been authorized to receive CSR funds aimed at promoting engineering excellence nationwide. In association with Infosys Foundation, INAE aims to uplift the quality of engineering education, especially in Tier 2 and Tier 3 institutions.
Following detailed engagement by INAE leadership with Senior leadership at Infosys Foundation, the Infosys Foundation has agreed to collaborate with INAE to support initiatives aligned with CSR objectives for a program on “Improving the quality of engineering teachers”.
An MoU was signed for a total CSR commitment of Rs 38.35 Crores over next few years.
A press release to this effect is as under:
This initiative is being rolled out in May/ June 2025 for faculty members in the field of Engineering Education for faculty/ Institutes.
