Prof. Subhransu Ranjan Samantaray

Present Designation:

Professor, IIT Bhubaneswar

Areas of Interest:

Power System Protection, PMU and WAMs, Smart Grid

Specialisation:

Power System Engineering

Major Professional Contributions:

Major contributions include protection of transmission networks and microgrids and applications of synchrophasor technology in power systems:

1.      Developed adaptive and intelligent protection schemes for transmission system including development of back-up protection systems, enhancing 3rd zone operation.

2.      Contribution in microgrid protection, including development of adaptive and intelligent anti-islanding and fault protection schemes, enhancing protection system reliability.

3.      Developed PMU algorithms complying to C37.118 standard, which are capable of handling both P and M-class PMU requirements, tracking dynamic phasors in stressed environment.

4.      Developed wide area measurement system-based catastrophe predictor for dynamic security assessment of large power networks and wide-area controls with enhanced accuracy.

Some of the algorithms have been tested in field by utilities in developed countries and will play an important role in Indian utilities
