Prof. Mike (Michael) Jon Schlaich
Present Designation:
Professor, Chair of Conceptual and Structural Design // Managing Director, Technische Universität Berlin, Germany // sbp schlaich bergermann partnerAreas of Interest:
Research
Research contributions on the field of lightweight structures, specifically Infra-lightweight concrete as loadbearing insulation and carbon-prestressed concrete for elegant and sustainable bridges and roofs.
Teaching Conceptual and Structural Design in a holistic and material comprehensive way
Due to todays technological, ecological and social challenges a new approach of the academic curricula essential is concerning structural and civil engineering. This paper describes the concept of materialcomprehensive conceptual and structural design as it is taught at the TU Berlin. This is one possibility to educate the next generation of structural engineers, to make them ready for facing the challenges to come.
Specialisation:
A specialist in lightweight structures, Mike is a firm believer in a holistic, conceptual design approach, and in engineers’ responsibility to contribute more to “baukultur” - that is the concept of producing quality structures to improve quality of life. He also has an enduring interest in creating free, clean, renewable energy by developing solar thermal powerplants in desert areas.
The main activities of Mike Schlaich are in the field of structural and civil engineering are lightweight structures and solar energy production. He is following his credo not as “l’art pour l’art”. In teaching, research and with his projects at schlaich bergermann partner he rather strives for saving resources by minimized use of materials and for producing clean, economic and renewable energy to improve everyone´s quality of live while at the same time contributing to what in German is called “Baukultur”.
To him, in order to be successful, the built environment should not only arrive at environmental friendliness and low energy consumption during construction and use but ultimately lead to more beauty.
The result of this thinking are numerous lightweight building projects all over the world with renowned architects and a wide range of solar thermal power plants which help to counteract climate change.
At the University, together with a strong team of doctor students, he lays the scientific and research base for such endeavours. His research work includes extradosed bridges, bending and fatigue of strands for bridge cables, carbon fibre tension elements, movable and adaptive structures, as well as the use of new materials such as carbon and infra-lightweight concrete.e result of this thinking are numerous lightweight building projects all over the world with renowned architects and a wide range of solar thermal power plants which help to counteract climate change.
