Keywords
Contribution on teaching and human resource development:
- Course Developed and Taught: Surface modification and coating technology, joining of metals, and jointly (with Prof. I. Manna) an online course on “Surface Engineering for Wear and Corrosion Resistance Application” under Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) program.
- Supervised 14 PhD, 32 M. Tech and 25 B.Tech theses.
Research Contribution::
- l Scope of application of laser surface engineering (LSE) in (a) refinement of microstructure (Mg alloy), extension of solid solubility limit (Cu alloys), and formation of metastable microstructure (Ti and Fe alloys), (b) achieving marked compositional and microstructural gradation in the alloyed zone to form diffused and adherent layer for better surface protection (stainless steel, Co/Ti-alloys), (c) fabrication of metal matrix composite surface layer with ultrafine/nanometric carbide and oxide dispersion in varying concentration with depth for significant improvement in wear and erosion resistance, and (d) development of suitable surface topography, texture and compositional modulation for desired bio- compatibility of Ti-alloy.
- l Establishment of innovative thermal/plasma/HVOF spray techniques to develop compositionally graded thermal barrier coating (TBC) on superalloy substrates for oxidation protection.
- l Development of nanometric nitride layer on top of stainless steel, Ti-alloys and IF steel to achieve dual benefits of enhanced wear and corrosion resistance.
- l Comparison of relative merits of competing surface engineering techniques, by application of plasma electrolytic oxidation, surface oxidation (by thermal and chemical) and plasma spray deposition, to develop bioactive surface on Ti-6Al-4V with improved toughness, and wear resistance.
