Prof. Anurag KUMAR
Present Designation:
Honorary Professor, Indian Institute of ScienceAreas of Interest:
Communication Networking; Cyber Physical Systems; Stochastic Modeling, Optimisation, and Control
Specialisation:
Communications, networking, information and decision sciences
Major Professional Contributions:
(i) Has published over 200 peer reviewed publications in journals and conferences.
(ii) Designed the traffic overload control for India’s Centre for Development of Telematics (CDoT) Main Automatic Exchange (MAX). This exchange has played a key role in the expansion of Indian telephone network from mid-1980s to 1990s.
(iii) He led the IISc team in India's nationwide effort to establish ERNET, India’s first wide area packet network, i.e., India's first Internet. During the course of this project, he introduced best practices in network measurement, modeling, and performance. Led the development of overlay controls for performance management of wireline and wireless networks.
(iv) He has developed new, widely cited, techniques for modeling the universally deployed IEEE 802.11 CSMA/CA miedium access protocol.
(v) He developed the earliest performance models of TCP over wireless links, with packet losses and channel fading. He made extensive contributions to stochastic modeling of key communication networking protocols: TCP (Internet’s Transmission Control Protocol), IEEE 802.11 (WiFi), and IEEE 802.15.4 (“Zigbee”) standard for IoT.
(vi) Lead author of two graduate level, internationally widely adopted text books: “Communication Networking: An Analytical Approach,” and “Wireless Networking”
(vii) Has guided (during a period of over 15 years) a small start-up company in developing a fully indigenous network simulation package. This produce now has an international market with over 400 customers across 15 countries.
(viii) Was Director of IISc, India’s top institute for graduate education and research in the sciences and in engineering; his administration undertook many initiatives, including: a peer reviewed tenure system; establishment of a Division of Interdisciplinary Research; vigorous efforts towards fund raising; initiatives for greatly enhanced industry related research; and digital platforms for the entire administration.
