Prof. Jayanta MUKHOPADHYAY
Present Designation:
Professor, Indian Instiute of Technology KharagpurAreas of Interest:
Computer Vision, Remote Sensing, Medical Informatics
Specialisation:
Image Processing; Medical Informatics
Major Professional Contributions:
Dr. Jayanta Mukhopadhyay is internationally very well recognized for his pioneering research work in the area of Image Processing as well as in Medical Informatics. He has published more than 300 research papers in refereed Journals and Conference Proceedings. He is one of the youngest recipients of the Young Scientist Award from the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) in the year 1992 for his work in the area of digital geometry and its application toward the development of image processing algorithms. He also received the prestigious Humboldt Research Fellowship from the Alexandar Von Humboldt Foundation, Germany in 2001. In 2009, he was elected as a Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE).
In his research contribution, Dr. Mukhopadhyay is known for his works on development of algorithms for various image and video processing tasks in the compressed domain. His works on image resizing, and color enhancement in this respect are well cited by the researchers in this area. He authored a book in this area (“Image and video processing in the compressed domain, CRC Press, USA, 2011”). He has also contributed significantly in the area digital geometry. In particular, he worked extensively on approximating Euclidean metrics by various digital distances, and developed various image processing algorithms driven by their geometry. He has also coauthored a book on digital geometry (“Digital geometry in image processing, CRC Press, USA, 2013”). There are also other areas in image and video processing, where he did extensive work and contributed to the development of new algorithms and theory, such as in color image processing, fractal image compression, video analytics and modeling, document image processing, and analysis of cultural heritage images.
Dr. Mukhopadhyay is also recognized for his works in areas of health care and medical image processing, as a part of his commitment to the society. In recent years, he worked extensively in neonatal health care, an area where India has to progress to improve its child mortality rate, in collaboration with the doctors from Department of Neonatology, Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (IPGMER), Kolkata, and has developed a number of techniques on analysis of neonatal EEG, image and video processing for the benefit of doctors in neurological examinations for new born babies. He has also worked on medical instrumentation and assistive technology for aiding navigation of visually challenged persons, holding the relevant international patent on electronic smart cane and retaining its right for the benefit of the society.
Dr. Mukhopadhyay is also widely recognized for his leadership role and contributions in establishing Telemedicine Services in the Government Hospitals of West Bengal and Tripura. As a co-principal investigator he handled several telemedicine projects in collaboration with WEBEL, Kolkata, and successfully implemented and deployed telemedicine systems and software in a number of Government hospitals of Tripura and West Bengal. During the project period for a span of ten years the telemedicine network covered 16 Government Hospitals in West Bengal. It is presently being used in 20 Government hospitals in Tripura with an annual turnover of more than 7000 patients under its coverage. These efforts have been recognized by the Govt. of India with the “National Award For Exemplary Implementation of E-Governance Initiative – 2004 on Telemedicine Project in West Bengal”. It has also received the “Skotch Challenger Award” in the year 2005. His team also developed a mobile based technology for treatment of pediatric HIV patients, which got recognition from the World Health Organization (WHO) as one of the innovative technologies in their report entitled “Compendium of new and emerging technologies that address global health concerns 2011”.
