Dr. Rabindra Nath GHOSH
Work Status: Retired
Last Designation: Chair Professor, MME Department, IIT Kharagpur
Areas of Interest:
High Temperature Materials, Creep Life prediction, Failure Analysis, Non-destructive Testing, Heat Treatment of Steel, Super-alloy, Mathematical modelling, Material Evaluation & Characterization
Specialisation:
Physical Metallurgy and Mechanical Metallurgy
Major Professional Contributions:
A metallurgical engineer by profession, he has served National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML), Jamshedpur and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur in various capacities. Evaluation & characterization of high temperature materials and development of physically based constitutive models has been his main area of research. Establishment of an active group for structural integrity and life assessment of engineering materials at NML Jamshedpur has been his major achievement. As a faculty member he has taught a wide range subjects like Physical Metallurgy, X-ray diffraction, Non-destructive testing, Failure analysis, Creep modelling and strengthening mechanisms. His lectures on Principles of Physical Metallurgy posted in NPTEL website (https://nptel.ac.in/course.html) maintained by IIT Madras are being accessed world over by students. He had also been a Post Doctoral Fellow at National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, UK and EPSRC Visiting Fellow at Department of Materials, Imperial College London. Now though retired he takes active interest in disseminating knowledge through technical discussions with former colleagues and their students in different parts of India.
