The Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), founded in 1987 comprises India’s most distinguished engineers, engineer-scientists and technologists covering the entire spectrum of engineering disciplines. INAE functions as an apex body and promotes the practice of engineering & technology and the related sciences for their application to solving problems of national importance. The Academy also provides a forum for futuristic planning for country’s development requiring engineering and technological inputs and brings together specialists from such fields as may be necessary for comprehensive solutions to the needs of the country.
INAE’s activities include programmes on issues of technology policy and overall development for the benefit of society, and the Academy promotes research projects, pilot studies, engineering education, fellowships, scholarships, awards and other benefactions. Seminars/Workshops/ Round Tables are conducted on topics of current national importance. The actionable recommendations emanating from the deliberations are submitted to the concerned Department/ Government agencies to assist in formulation of national policies.
Election to the Academy is by nomination only. Upto 50 Fellows from Academia, Research & Development, Industry and other organizations may be elected each year from nominations received from Fellows of INAE. As per the Rules and Regulations of the Academy, the total number of Fellows at any time may not exceed 1200 and foreign fellows at any time may not exceed 120.
INAE honours Indian and Foreign nationals who are elected by “peer” committees in recognition of their personal achievements in engineering which are of exceptional merit and distinctive eminence in new and developing fields of technology. The Fellows on election to the Academy are entitled to use abbreviated title “FNAE”.
As the only engineering Academy of the country, INAE represents India at the International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences (CAETS); which is a premier non-governmental international organization comprising of Member Academies from 33 countries across the world, with the objective of contributing to the advancement of science and technology and promoting sustainable economic growth of all nations.

The Academy is registered under the Societies Registration Act 1860 and is an autonomous professional body supported partly through grant-in-aid by Department of Science & Technology, Government of India. As the only engineering Academy of the country, INAE represents India at the International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences (CAETS).
Benefactions to the Academy
The Academy is an autonomous professional body partly supported by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. To carry out its aims and objects, the Academy relies, for a major part, on financial support from project funds, contributions and sponsorships. It has been possible to undertake a range of activities by the generosity of the benefactors. The Academy welcomes donations from individuals, corporations and sponsors.
Purpose
Donations or bequests can be applied to any purpose that is consistent with the Academy’s aims and objects. The Academy welcomes benefactions which encourage and promote the pursuit of excellence in the field of Engineering, inventions, investigations, applications oriented research, Professorships and awards etc.
Tax Deductibility
INAE is recognized under section 12A of Income Tax Act, 1961 as per Registration no. AAAAI0043AE19902 dated 24.09.2021. Further INAE is also registered under section 80G of Income Tax Act, 1961 as per order no. AAAAI0043AF20213 dated 31.12.2021 under which the contributors are eligible to get a deduction for 50% (as per old regime) of the contributions made to INAE from the total income, and there is no requirement of deduction of tax at source (TDS) from such contribution.
A certificate to the donor shall be issued by INAE for claiming the rebate on taxation as above.
