Professor Jai Krishna and Professor SN Mitra Memorial Awards

Purpose of the Award

To institute awards in memory of late Prof. Jai Krishna, Foundation President and Prof SN Mitra, first Honorary Secretary, a Past Vice- President and a Foundation Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering

Prof Jai Krishna Award shall be given each year in the disciplines of Engineering Section I (Civil Engineering), Engineering Section III (Mechanical Engineering), Engineering Section IV (Chemical Engineering), Engineering Section VII (Aerospace Engineering) and Engineering Section VIII (Mining, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering)

Prof S N Mitra Memorial Award shall be given each year, in the disciplines of Engineering Section II (Computer Engineering and Information Technology), Engineering Section V (Electrical Engineering), Engineering Section VI (Electronics & Communication Engineering), Engineering Section IX (Energy Engineering) and Engineering Section X (Interdisciplinary Engineering and Special Fields)

Eligibility
INAE Fellows who are eminent engineers, engineer scientists or technologists of high achievements and standing will be eligible for the subject awards.  They are expected to have made contributions of a high order to Indian Engineering and Technology and acquired a high level of eminence and respect in the engineering community.

Criteria
The awards shall be given for one or more of the following :

INAE fellows who are eminent engineers, engineer scientists or technologists of high achievements and standing will be eligible for the subject awards.

Academic and scholarly achievements in any discipline of Engineering and Technology,

Outstanding research in engineering and technology and application thereof,

Outstanding contributions in the management of education and research in Engineering,

Outstanding achievements and contributions in the Indian industry, engineering  services or engineering projects.

Nominations
Nominations of engineers, engineer-scientists and technologists will be invited from the INAE Fellowship by the second week of April every year in the fields of Engineering, Technology, and Technical Education Management. The nominations may be sent on the prescribed proforma which includes a statement of the distinguished achievements and contributions of the nominee.  The last date of receipt of nominations will be 15th day of May each year.

Validity
The nominations shall remain valid for three years and renominations shall be accepted.

Selection for the Award
The Selection Committee under the Chairmanship of President with three Vice-Presidents as members will recommend one nominee each for conferment of Prof. Jai Krishna Memorial Award and Prof. SN Mitra Memorial Award for approval of the Council.

Value of the Award
The Award shall carry Rs.2 lakhs in cash and a Citation.

Presentation of the Award
The awardees will be requested to deliver a public lecture on an appropriate subject of their choice in any field of Engineering, Technology or Engineering Education Management at the Academy Annual Convention.  The text of the Award Lectures will be published in the Annals of INAE.

RECIPIENTS OF PROFESSOR JAI KRISHNA MEMORIAL AWARD

Dr. V. Adimurthy

Dr. V. Adimurthy, who is presently ISRO Honorary Distinguished Professor, is the Chairman of the Mars Mission Study Team whose Report of July 2011 provided the integrated conceptual design for India’s successful Mars Orbiter Mission. Dr. Adimurthy received his Ph.D. degree in 1973 for his work on hypersonic low-density flows over reentry bodies from IIT, Kanpur, and joined the Indian Space Program immediately thereafter. During more than four decades of his professional career, Dr. Adimurthy made significant individual contributions to engineering sciences in the areas of aerodynamics, flight dynamics, trajectory optimization, space dynamics, space debris studies, lunar and interplanetary mission design, and multi-disciplinary design optimization. All the unique trajectory designs of ISRO launch missions are carried out using the Trajectory Optimization Software PYOPT developed by Dr Adimurthy. He has also spearheaded ISRO developments on Space Debris Mitigation Technologies, Hypersonic Aerodynamics and MDO Research; and published more than 150 papers in these broad areas.

RECIPIENTS OF PROFESSOR SN MITRA MEMORIAL AWARD  

2016

Prof VS Borkar

Prof. Borkar, Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has made significant contributions to the theory, algorithms and applications of stochastic optimization and control. These include:
1. Fundamental contributions to control of Markov processes in both discrete and continuous time and space, much of it using a convex analytic framework that he developed. This includes characterization of optimal solutions for ergodic and risk-sensitive control, convergence of self-tuning schemes, constrained control, control under partial observations, multiagent and hybrid control, and index policies for multiarmed bandit problems arising in scheduling.
2. Stability, sample complexity and convergence analysis of stochastic iterative algorithms including their multi-timescale and distributed asynchronous variants, and applications thereof to estimation, resource allocation problems in communications, machine learning (notably reinforcement learning for approximate dynamic programming), and network science.
