Major Professional Contributions:


Dr. Joshi has made path-breaking contributions to the conceptual development of the effective time theory buttressed by rigorous experimental validation, which allows time dependent materials to obey thermo-rheological simplicity in the effective time space. This work has led to the time dependent materials to demonstrate the fundamental principles of linear viscoelasticity. Dr. Joshi has established for the first time the concept of time – temperature – stress equivalence for soft glassy materials that enables prediction of important macroscopic properties over a long time, and can be used as an important characterization tool. Very recently Dr. Joshi has also proposed a comprehensive non-equilibrium thermodynamics theory to predict soft glassy material's approach to equilibrium influenced by the deformation field. Importantly the model also gives indication of what kind of rheological behavior is expected merely by knowing relaxation time and modulus dependence on time.

The validation of time - temperature superposition principle for metastable pasty materials demonstrated by Dr. Joshi has led to development of a procedure to predict a rheological shelf life of commercially important pasty soft materials. This procedure developed by Dr. Joshi has been commercially implemented by United Phosphorous Ltd. to predict shelf life of their agrochemical pastes. This procedure, which predicts the rheological behavior over duration of years also takes into account conditions prevailing at the end user's location. This procedure is also being used by Unilever Research to standardize their formulations.

Dr. Joshi also made fundamental contribution in understanding phase behavior of clay suspension. Importantly Dr. Joshi has provided a means to resolve the long standing issue of how to differentiate between glass and gel states of soft matter using rheological tools
