Major Professional Contributions:

a) Joined ISRO in 1971 after post graduation from IIT-Madras. Made significant contributions to ISRO's Launch Vehicle and Satellite programmes. Developed the first computerized checkout system for SLV-3 Project during the tenure as Engineer-in-charge, Checkout systems development, under the leadership of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Later moved to PSLV Project and established an exclusive integration and checkout facility for vertical / horizontal assembly and testing of PSLV and GSLV class vehicles. Also was responsible for the realization of 14 subassemblies consisting of avionics, control & pyro systems, power systems, etc., and their integration and checkout for 8 PSLV launches and 2 GSLV launches, managing a team of about 500 personnel of various engineering disciplines with very systematic planning, organizing and fault-less execution of the tasks with the adoption of high technology with 100% indigenous efforts as Dy. Director, VSSC (Mechanisms, Vehicle Integration & Testi ng Entity). Took charge as Director of IISU, in July 2002.
b) As Director, ISRO Inertial Systems Unit (IISU), Trivandrum
I was responsible for the delivery of Inertial Navigation Systems and Rate Gyro Packages for PSLV, GSLV and Spacecraft projects. The performance of these inertial navigation systems has been at par with those of other space fairing nations like Europe and the USA. Also was responsible for supply of Inertial Reference Units (IRU), Momentum and Reaction Wheels, Solar Array Drives and Scan mechanisms for various spacecraft projects of ISRO. Precise re-entry & recovery of India's Space Capsule Recovery Experiment is testimony to the IISU's contributions in this area. Advanced Avionics Module (AAM), GPS Aided Navigation System (GAINS), RESINS Mk-IV, Advanced Inertial System (AINS), etc., were developed, qualified and inducted in regular flights. Development of advanced Inertial Systems like Optical Gyros, Quartz Accelerometers, Vibrating Accelerometers, High Torque Reaction Wheels, Scan Mechanism for INSAT 3D VHRR are also significant contributions. The inertial navigation system s upplied by IISU for PSLV-C11/ Chandrayaan-1 mission gave excellent orbital accuracy of 250x22,000km. For Chandrayaan-I mission, Inertial Reference and Accelerometer Package consisting of Mini-DTGs and Ceramic Servo Accelerometers, which was used for precise lunar insertion and also attitude control (lunar orbit) without star sensor update. Other achievements in Chandrayaan-I include continuous attitude control achieved using Reaction Wheel assembly with 5 Nms & 0.05 Nm torque as well as Solar Array Drive Mechanism (SADA) with unified electronics used for continuously pointing solar panel to Sun for power generation. On 1st November '09, took over the Directorship of VSSC.
c) As Director, VSSC
From 1st Nov., 2009, took over as Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, the lead Centre of ISRO responsible for design, development, testing, integration and checkout of Launch Vehicles. During this tenure, PSLV successfully launched C15(Cartosat-2B), C16(Resourcesat-2), C-17(GSAT-12) and C18 (Megha-Tropiques) missions. GSLV-D3 mission with indigenous cryogenic stage (CUSP) and GSLV F-06 mission were also accomplished. GSLV-D5 with next indigenous cryo stage made ready for launch. Significant progress has made for GSLV Mk-III Project with the successful qualification of S200 Solid booster (third largest solid booster in the world) & L110 liquid stage. GSLV Mk-III-X Mission is now in integration stage for launch. Other advanced projects, like Re-usable Launch Vehicle-Technology Demonstrator, Air Breathing propulsion, etc. are also being pursued actively resolving all technical issues. Establishment of some of the world class facilities, like 1m Hypersonic Wind Tunnel, 6 MW Plasma Wind Tunnel Facility, 220TF Satish Dhawan Super Computing Facility, 250 kN Shaker at VSSC and establishment of 500 TPA Titanium Sponge Plant at KMML- Kollam are also noteworthy.

Leading a team of more than 500 personnel successfully integrated and launched 4 nos. of SLV-3, 25 nos. of PSLV and 8 nos. of GSLV. The task involves system planning, organizing, designing and faultless operation of Launch vehicles with totally 100% indigenous efforts.

(Addl.Secretary Grade) July 2002 – Oct. 2009 As Director, ISRO Inertial Systems Unit was responsible for the design, development and delivery of inertial systems such as, Inertial navigation system, Inertial reference unit, Momentum wheels, etc for ISRO's Launch vehicle and Spacecraft Projects. Under my leadership, IISU delivered Inertial systems for 15 launch vehicles and 20 Spacecraft Projects. The highest ever achievement is the Inertial system for Chandrayaan Project which enables very accurate navigation and orbit of Chandrayaan Mission in 2008. The inertial systems delivered were of world class, matches with performance of similar systems of NASA and ESA.

(Addl.Secretary Grade) 01-11-2009 to 31-12-2012 As Director, VSSC managed and directed the Lead Centre of ISRO for the Launch Vehicle Technology. Leading a multi-disciplinary team of 5000 people consisting of Engineers, Technicians and technologists with a budget of more than Rs.2000 crores per year was a big challenge. During my three year period as Director, VSSC, 7 PSLVs and 2 GSLVs were launched, more than 15 spacecraft projects were supported by VSSC. Significant progress has made for GSLV Mk-III Project with the successful qualification of S200 Solid booster (third largest solid booster in the world) & L110 liquid stage.
