Consultancy Areas:

  • During my previous tenure at CSIR-SERC, Chennai, (1983-2013), as Head of the Wind Engineering Laboratory I have rendered consultancy services to the industry by undertaking several wind tunnel testing on models of tall buildings/chimneys/cooling towers etc.
  • Some of the wind tunnel experiments, such as carried out for ISRO, and Madras Fertilizers Limited (MFL) were unique in the sense that arriving at engineering solutions otherwise through numerical/theoretical methods is nearly impossible due to the complexity in wind flow patterns and due to aerodynamic and aero-elastic interactions.

  • Contributions to BIS codes on wind loads.
  • Modification factors, ‘k1’ and ‘k2 ’ for design wind speed, IS: 875 (Part 3)-1987.
  • Recommendation of basic cyclonic wind speed, and risk coefficient, k1 for cyclonic regions, IS: 15498: 2004.
  • Innovative solutions to industrial problems on wind- sensitive structures, through boundary layer wind tunnel testing on structural models.
  • Semi-empirical method to predict across-wind response of tall circular chimneys to vortex shedding, with closed-form solution for use in design office.
  • Contributed to Section. 4, of the National Guidelines on Management of Cyclones brought out by NDMA, GOI.
