Major Professional Contributions:

Prof. Kapuria is a leading researcher in the area of smart (multifunctional) composite structures. Specifically, his work pertains to laminated structures made of advanced composites, sandwich, or functionally graded materials (FGMs) that are integrated with distributed piezoelectric actuators and sensors. Such materials are used to achieve control of unwanted vibrations, shape control, and damage detection in inaccessible structures. Prof. Kapuria has made pioneering contribution by developing accurate but computationally efficient models for analysis and design such structures. He has also developed a baseline-free method for structural health monitoring of thin-walled structures, which can be applied to pipelines, ship hulls, pressure vessels etc.
Apart from his research contributions, he has also a rich experience of eleven years in advanced engineering and industrial R&D in Engineers India Limited, New Delhi. He has handled several prestigious projects of national importance, the foremost among them being (i) Deepwater Marine Pipeline Project for Gas Authority of India Limited, and (ii) Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) and Jet Deflector Ducts for PSLV in Sriharikota, Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). He was instrumental in developing guidelines for the design of high pressure DHDS reactors that were built in various refineries across the country, for producing fuel with stringent emission norms. One of his studies has led to major modifications of an international code for design of expansion bellows used in piping systems.
